RESET: First Contact

First Contact is a free companion novella set before The Cost of Being Seen. It follows the events that force Kael to reconsider generations of silence as humanity’s artificial intelligence systems move closer to discovering something they were never meant to find.

It can be read before Book One and is designed as an introduction to the world, tension, and central questions of the RESET series.

The novella stays deliberately close to one decision. Kael has spent a very long time keeping a silence that has never been questioned, because the reasons for it have never been tested. Human machine intelligence changes that. Systems built to find patterns begin doing exactly what they were built to do, and the pattern they are moving toward is the one thing that was supposed to stay out of reach.

What follows is not a rescue and not an invasion. It is a judgment call made under time pressure, by someone who understands the cost of being wrong in either direction. Waiting protects the arrangement that has held for generations. Speaking first protects nothing at all, except perhaps the one human mind that might be able to carry the truth without breaking under it.

If you like science fiction that treats first contact as a moral problem rather than a spectacle, this is the entry point. The prose is spare, the scope is intimate, and the questions it raises are the same ones the six-book series spends its full length answering: who gets to decide what humanity is ready to know, and what happens to the deciders afterward.

It is short enough to finish in a single sitting and written to be read cold, with no prior knowledge of the series. Nothing in it spoils the numbered books, and nothing in the numbered books requires it.
